Lessons from Diamond

John 13:34-35 (ESV)
34 A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. 35 By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.

As I am dealing with some unknown health issues I have done a lot of thinking.  One of the things that came across my mind was how I miss Diamond.  Diamond was our pound puppy that we had to have put down in August due to her failing health and strength. As I thought about her today I thought about some of the lessons I learned from her about love.

If Diamond were to teach you about love  and life in general here is what she would say:
1. When loved ones come home, always run to greet them.
2. Never pass up the opportunity to go for a joyride with family.
3. Allow the experience of fresh air and the wind in your face to be pure Ecstasy.
4. Take naps.
5. Stretch before rising.
5. Run, romp, and play daily.
6. Thrive on attention and let people touch you.
7. Avoid biting when a simple growl will do.
8. On warm days, stop to lie on your back on the grass.
9. On hot days, drink lots of water and lie under a shady tree.
10. When you're happy, dance around and wag your entire body.
11. Delight in the simple joy of a long walk.
12. Be loyal.
13. Never pretend to be something you're not.
14. If what you want lies buried, dig until you find it.
15. When someone is having a bad day, be silent, sit close by, and nuzzle them gently.

As a good friend of mine always reminds me, “Love is the answer.”  Take the time today to share the love that God has put in your heart.

Dear Lord, we thank You for all that You do for us, especially for loving us. Help us to share that love today. In the Name of Jesus, Amen.

I always had to be careful what I told him to do, because I knew he would do it.

2 John 6 (ESV)
And this is love, that we walk according to his commandments; this is the commandment, just as you have heard from the beginning, so that you should walk in it.

It has been about a month since we had to say goodbye to Diamond. As I lay here recovering from back surgery a lot of thoughts have been marching through my head, one of which is about Diamond. I was remembering how faithful she was.  She took as her main job in life to take care of me.  Many times I would be trying to cover up the pain I was experiencing which went pretty well Except for Diamond.  My wife always could tell the degree of my pain by the way Diamond would stay by my side, the greater the pain the closer she would stick to me like glue.

Archibald Rutledge wrote that one day he met a man whose dog had just been killed in a forest fire. Heartbroken, the man explained to Rutledge how it happened. Because he worked out-of-doors, he often took his dog with him. That morning, he left the animal in a clearing and gave him a command to stay and watch his lunch bucket while he went into the forest. His faithful friend understood, for that's exactly what he did. Then a fire started in the woods, and soon the blaze spread to the spot where the dog had been left. But he didn't move. He stayed right where he was, in perfect obedience to his master's word. With tearful eyes, the dog's owner said, "I always had to be careful what I told him to do, because I knew he would do it."

WOW! There is a great lesson there for us. As we read God’s Word and listen to His words to us would God say that about us, “I knew he or she would do that.”

Dear Lord, help us to be so obedient to the things that You tell us to do that there will be no doubt of what we will do. In the Name of Jesus, Amen.

A Lesson I learned from Diamond

Luke 18:6-8 (NIV)
6 And the Lord said, “Listen to what the unjust judge says. 7 And will not God bring about justice for his chosen ones, who cry out to him day and night? Will he keep putting them off? 8 I tell you, he will see that they get justice, and quickly. However, when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on the earth?”

Would you like some cheese with that whine Diamond? Whine, whine, whine. How I get fed up some days with listening to Diamond whine. In fact I get so sick of hearing her whine she often ends up getting exactly what she wants just to shut her up. Talk about enabling her to continue in a negative behavior pattern. Shame on me!

At the same time however Diamond's whining has reminded me of Christ's positive command to his disciples to always pray and not give up. The parable of the persistent widow reveals that consistency in prayer does work. The unjust judge, simply to get rid of the women and not wear himself out, finally gave her justice.

So, as cheesy as it may sound, I am not going to give up whining, sending up a plaintive, mournful cry before God in regards to the many unjust situations facing our world today. I know for myself I find it easy to forget about the terrible dilemma many of our Christian brothers and sisters face each and every day in third world countries; Beatings, torture, death, alienation, poverty and the like, all because of their faith in Christ Jesus. How they need the consistency of our prayers for justice.

Now when Diamond whines instead of being annoyed and fed up I allow it to be a godly reminder to me to be consistent in prayer for justice, that the whole world might live in freedom and peace.

Dear Lord, thank you for the Bible and how it reminds us to  pray for justice and not give up. Thank You that with you all things are possible. Help us to pray and to not give up. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.

What I Learned From Diamond and Dakota

Ephesians 6:5-7 (NIV)
5 Slaves, obey your earthly masters with respect and fear, and with sincerity of heart, just as you would obey Christ. 6 Obey them not only to win their favor when their eye is on you, but as slaves of Christ, doing the will of God from your heart. 7 Serve wholeheartedly, as if you were serving the Lord, not people,

We have 2 dogs One a Dalmatian and the other a Husky.
Our Dalmatian, Diamond, has many positive attributes. When I come home from working, she is waiting for me at the door and greets me with her vocal welcome and her tail wagging eagerly.  She will chase the sticks I throw for her, and if she feels like it, she will even bring them back to me. She usually comes immediately when I call her . Sometimes, "immediately" can have a number of different meanings, especially if there's another dog around, a squirrel or a particularly good smell that might not be there next time  and has to check it out now.

In general, it can truly be said that Diamond enjoys life to the fullest. One of her best traits is that she loves her people. In fact she thinks of her family as her responsibility to have us take care of her.
I can say many good things about Diamond, but I can’t say that she works. But then, dogs don't work! It's not in their nature!

Or is it? Now we look at our other dog Dakota my son’s Husky.

Up in the far north you will find several breeds of dogs that are renowned for their work ethic. We generally lump them all together under the name "Husky", but if you want to be precise, you will find the Siberian Husky, the Alaskan Malamute, the Samoyed, the Eskimo dog and the Greenland dog!

These dogs are bred to work, and when not working, they generally don't move all that much. They want to conserve their energy for the important things of life!

What's amazing is that the blood vessels of these dogs are quite different from dog breeds of the south. This permits them to stand, run and sleep on snow for long periods of time without frostbite. They don't even suffer from the "frozen-paw-stuck-in-the-snow" scenario! In addition, they have the ability to eat less than other dogs their size, all the while being able to work much harder!
Another attribute of the husky is that it does not require shelter, even in sub-Arctic temperatures. They have extremely thick fur, and just like in the movie, "Eight Below", they curl up with their noses under their tails and let the snow bury them. This provides them with much needed insulation and shelter. They even have thick fur growing between their toes, providing them with the insulation they need for their feet! This can be seen as Dakota tries to make the turn on our wooden floor to get out the back door as he slides around the corner.

The coat of the husky actually lies in two layers: The soft undercoat, which provides the warmth that they need; and the silky outer coat, which gives protection against wind and water. It could be said that they come completely equipped for the winter! No winter boots for them!

Huskies generally can carry at least half their body weight, and they can pull twice their weight over miles and miles of snow and ice. When used to pull a sled, the husky will assume a specific, steady, fast trot that they can keep up for hours with very little effort. Some have been observed, for short distances, to haul up to 2000 lbs.
Of course huskies do have their downsides. They aren't really known to be the "Dalmatian" kind of dog. They love to be petted, but most huskies have a streak of independence, much like their cousin the wolf. Although they work hard, most of them refuse to fetch, track or do little tricks. But if you look at it from their point of view, you would understand. After all, they are bred to work, not to be clowns! That would be far too humiliating!

We can learn a lesson from each of our dogs: the `Dalmatian' types, who enjoy life and love people; and the `husky' types, who work to their full potential. God asks us to do both! To love people as Jesus loves them, to enjoy the life He has given us, and to work to our full potential, as if we are working for God!

If we have both of these attitudes, there is no way we would ever find the time (or the reason!) to grumble and complain. Wouldn't that go far towards attracting more people to God?

Dear Lord, thanks for the lessons that You put all around us. Help us to have our eyes and hearts open to them. As we see from the Dalmatian and the Husky help us enjoy the life You have given to us and to do the work that You have before each of us. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Diamond and Distractions

Hebrews 12:1-2 (New International Version)
1 Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, 2 fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

I can learn a lot from my dog.

Our Dalmatian, Diamond, is a people pleaser. Her only motivation is to know that what she is doing pleases you. She's actually a pretty amazing dog!

Except.

Except when she forgets we exist!

And unfortunately, her memory isn't very long.

Or maybe it is her concentration that is poor. I'm not sure. But whatever it is, the minute something new catches her attention, she forgets that we walk the face of the earth.

The distractions come in many forms. Often then are odors, or "scents" as they are called in the dog world. They can also be visual, such as the sight of a chicken or a cat, and they can be auditory as well, such as a call or whistle, or perhaps the chatter of a squirrel.

Take the "come" command, for example. When Diamond has her eyes on me, I have no problems with her. As soon as the word is out of my mouth, she comes running. Until her nose catches a particular odor that MUST be sniffed, that is. Then nothing will make her come. Or maybe the distracter is another dog, in which case, she doesn't stop running, she simply changes her direction. It is safe to say that until she once again focuses her attention on me, I have lost her completely.

Naturally, in such times, our runs cannot progress and precious time is wasted.

I might be tempted to get aggravated at her (and I have succumbed to that temptation on many occasions!), but I have to admit that she is no different than I am!

Just as she loves me, her master, and wants to please me, I love Jesus and want to please Him. And as long as my attention is fixed on Jesus, there is no problem! But I am also easily distracted, and my distractions come in many forms as well. Some are temptations, some bear the label of "pride" or "selfishness", and some come in even more coy packages such as self-advancement, even ambition. Still other distractions come by focusing too much on circumstance, and others may include addictions or just plain "having fun".

Now, my distractions may not seem as silly as smelling that particular spot on the post, or seeing a squirrel in a tree; but they are still distracters. They still take my mind off of Jesus, they make me stop depending upon Him, and sometimes they make me forget that He even exists.

Just imagine what God could accomplish through us if we didn't waste so much time on petty distractions! It isn't for nothing that we are told:

The next time you are tempted to be aggravated by a dog who thinks that a scent is more important than obedience, let it remind us of something in our life that is keeping our focus away from Jesus!

Dear Lord we pray today that we would not let the distractions of life get in the way of us keeping our focus on You. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Whining and Prayer

Luke 18:2-3 (New American Standard Bible)
2 saying, “In a certain city there was a judge who did not fear God and did not respect man. 3 There was a widow in that city, and she kept coming to him, saying, ‘Give me legal protection from my opponent.’

Would you like some cheese with that whine Diamond? Whine, whine, whine. How I get fed up some days with listening to that dog whine. In fact I get so sick of hearing her whine she often ends up getting exactly what she wants just to shut her up. Talk about enabling her to continue in a negative behaviour pattern.

"Jesus said: And will not God bring about justice for his chosen ones, who cry out to him day and night? Will he keep putting them off? I tell you, he will see that they get justice, and quickly." Luke 18:6-8a NIV

So, as silly as it may sound, I am not going to give up whining, I will keep going to our Lord sending up a cry in regards to the many unjust situations facing our world today. I know for myself I find it easy to forget about the terrible dilemma many of our Christian brothers and sisters face each and every day. How they need the consistency of our prayers.

Now when Diamond whines instead of being annoyed and fed up I will allow it to be a godly reminder to me to be consistent in prayer for justice, that the whole world might live in freedom and peace.

Dear Lord, thank you for this Scriptural reminder to always pray for justice and not give up. We pray that we will always remember to come to You in prayer. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
