Ephesians 6:11 (ESV)
Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to
stand against the schemes of the devil.
Recently a group stayed by the ocean in Florida. One day
was exceptionally windy, and They could be seen entering the water, encased in
their wet suits, their surfboards attached to their ankles, less they became
separated as the surfers rode the wave. Riding the wave in must have been the
exhilarating element of the surfing experience! Some rides were very short, but
others had a much longer duration. They would repeat the entire cycle again and
again before they left the beach.
Protection is important in this sport. The wet-suits protected the surfers from the cold Atlantic ocean, just as the armor of God
protects the believer from the attacks of Satan. In Ephesians 6:11 Paul tells
us about this armor. It is a gift from God, composed of the helmet of
salvation, the breastplate of righteousness, the shield of faith, the belt of
truth, shoes for proclaiming the truth, and the sword of the Spirit (God's
Word).
It would be disastrous to the surfer if he lost his
board, which could easily occur as waves toss him to and fro continuously. That
is why in this water sport, the board is attached to the ankle with a cord.
Likewise, I want to always keep the Holy Spirit attached to me. Jesus told us
He would give us the Holy Spirit to indwell us and I thankfully accept this
person of the Trinity into my everyday life.
Wave riding in the ocean and living our everyday life has
its highs and lows.
Dear Lord, thank for the armor You have given us, and the
Holy Spirit who will always be available to comfort and guide us. In Jesus’
Name, Amen.
